Get started with RecursiveChat

From a new account to a live AI chat on your website in about ten minutes, with your team ready to step in.

How it fits together

A workspace is your business. It holds your websites, your team and your billing. Each website gets its own chat widget and at least one AI agent. An agent has instructions, a tone and knowledge: the pages, text and files it answers from.

Visitors chat in the widget on your site. The agent answers straight away. Every conversation lands in the shared Inbox, where anyone on your team can read along, reply or take over, from a computer or their phone.

1. Add your website

In the dashboard, open Websites and add your site. Paste its address; we only need the domain. The website page shows the widget snippet and your site ID, which starts with wgt_.

2. Create an AI agent

Open AI Agents and create an agent for the website. Give it a name visitors will see, such as "Acme Support". You can change everything later in the agent's Settings tab: instructions, tone, language, welcome message and how it passes chats to your team.

Start with short instructions that say what your business does and who the visitors are. The guide Getting the best answers has a template you can copy.

3. Give it knowledge

The agent only answers from its knowledge, so this step matters most. On the agent's Knowledge tab, choose Add knowledge and add any of:

  • Web page: a page on your site, such as your FAQ, pricing or help pages. Screenshots and videos on the page are kept with the text around them, so the AI can show them as cards under its answer. Refresh it whenever the page changes.
  • Text: anything you paste in, such as a product guide or policies.
  • File: a PDF, plain text or Markdown file.

Each source shows Ready once it has been read and indexed, usually within a minute.

4. Test it

Use the Test agent tab to ask the questions your customers really ask. The replies are exactly what visitors will see, using the same knowledge and settings. When the agent would pass a chat to your team, the test chat says so.

5. Decide how your team takes over

In the agent's Settings, Passing chats to your team controls when the AI hands a conversation over, how soon you usually reply and when your team is around. The AI uses those words when it hands over, so visitors know it is not live chat. Handed over chats are marked Needs you in the Inbox, and you get a notification.

6. Install the widget

Paste the snippet before the closing </body> tag on every page, using your own site ID. Most website builders have a place for custom code in the site settings.

index.html
<script
  src="https://api.recursivechat.dev/widget.js"
  data-site="wgt_your_site_id"
  async
></script>

The widget loads in the background and lives in its own shadow DOM, so it never clashes with your styles. To control it from your code, see Widget and JavaScript.

Go live checklist

  1. Knowledge covers your top questions, and every source shows Ready.
  2. Instructions say what you do and who you help, in a few short lines.
  3. Reply time and team hours are filled in, and the chat header does not promise instant replies from people.
  4. The widget colour matches your brand (Settings, Appearance).
  5. You have tried the Test agent tab with real customer questions.
  6. Someone on the team has notifications on for the Inbox.
