FAQ
Questions and answers
Everything you might want to know about RecursiveChat, from how the AI learns your business to pricing, privacy and the developer API.
The basics
What is RecursiveChat?
RecursiveChat is AI chat for your website. You add a small chat widget to your site, an AI agent answers visitors using your own pages and documents, and your team can take over any conversation from the shared inbox or their phone.
Who is RecursiveChat for?
Small businesses, online shops, SaaS products, creators and agencies who want visitors to get instant answers without hiring a full support team, while still having a real person step in when it matters.
How is it different from a normal chatbot?
Most chatbots only answer with AI. RecursiveChat combines an AI agent trained on your content with a team inbox, so a person can take over any conversation, reply from their phone, and follow up by email if the visitor has left.
How long does it take to set up?
A few minutes. Create a free account, add your website, create an AI agent, give it some of your pages as knowledge and paste one line of code into your site.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You copy one script tag into your site, the same way you would add analytics. Most website builders have a place to paste custom code. Developers can go further with the JavaScript API and REST API.
Which websites does it work with?
Any website where you can add a script tag, including WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, Framer and custom built sites.
The AI agent
What is an agent?
An agent is the AI assistant that answers visitors on one of your websites. Each agent has its own instructions, tone, language and knowledge. A website needs at least one active agent before the chat appears on it.
How does the AI learn about my business?
You add knowledge sources to your agent: web page URLs, text you paste in, or files. RecursiveChat reads them, splits them into passages and, when a visitor asks something, finds the most relevant passages and answers from them.
Which files can I upload as knowledge?
PDF, plain text (.txt) and Markdown (.md) files, up to 10 MB each.
Does it crawl my whole website?
No. You add the specific page URLs you want it to learn from, such as your home page, pricing, FAQ and help articles. This keeps the AI focused on content you have chosen.
What happens when the AI does not know the answer?
The AI is told to answer only from your knowledge and never to invent prices, policies or product details. When your knowledge does not cover a question, it says it is not sure and offers to connect the visitor with your team, who can step in from the inbox.
Can I control how the AI talks?
Yes. Each agent has custom instructions, a tone (friendly, professional or concise) and a welcome message.
Does it speak other languages?
Yes. By default the agent replies in the same language as the visitor's message. You can also set it to always reply in one language. Your team can reply in the visitor's language too, with Tidy with AI.
Which AI model does RecursiveChat use?
RecursiveChat currently uses OpenAI models to write answers and to understand your knowledge.
Can I have more than one agent?
Yes, on the Pro plan you can have up to 3 agents per website. The Free plan includes 1 agent per website.
Your team and the inbox
How does human takeover work?
Every conversation shows up in the shared inbox. Any team member can take over a conversation, which pauses the AI for that chat so a person can reply. When you are done, you can hand it back to the AI.
Can I reply from my phone?
Yes. The inbox works as an app on your phone. Add it to your home screen and turn on notifications to get an alert when a visitor sends a message.
What if the visitor leaves before we reply?
If the visitor has given their email address, replies are emailed to them. They can answer that email and their reply lands back in the same conversation.
Can visitors get a copy of the conversation?
Yes. When a conversation is closed, a transcript is emailed to the visitor if we have their email address, and to the workspace owners and admins.
What roles can team members have?
Owner, admin, agent and viewer. Admins manage the workspace, agents answer conversations, and viewers can read without replying. You can also limit a team member to specific websites.
Can my team reply in other languages?
Yes. Write your reply in your own language and tap Tidy with AI under the reply box. It tidies the spelling and flow, and if the visitor wrote in another language, translates your reply into it. A note tells you which language it used, and you can read the English version before you send. Nothing is sent until you press Send.
What does Tidy with AI change?
It fixes spelling, grammar and long or muddled sentences in your tone, and keeps every fact, link, number and name you wrote. It never adds promises or prices. Undo puts your original draft back.
Can I leave notes for my team in a conversation?
Yes. Internal notes are visible to your team only and are never shown to the visitor or included in transcripts.
Can visitors send images?
Yes. Visitors and your team can attach images (JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF) up to 10 MB each, with up to 4 images per message.
Can I export conversations?
Yes. Conversations can be exported as JSON or CSV, with an option to anonymise names so you can share transcripts safely.
The chat widget
Can I change how the widget looks?
Yes. You can set the main colour, place it on the left or right, use a chat bubble or your avatar as the launcher, upload an avatar, change the header title and subtitle, and add a short callout message.
Will the widget slow down my site?
No. The script loads asynchronously, so it does not block your page from loading.
Will it clash with my site styles?
No. The widget runs in its own isolated shadow DOM, so your site's CSS does not affect it and its styles do not affect your site.
Does it work well on phones?
Yes. On phones the chat opens full screen, adjusts to the keyboard, and the back button closes it like a native app.
Can I open the chat from my own button?
Yes. Call RecursiveChat('open') from any button or link. The JavaScript API also supports close, toggle, identify, setMetadata, sendMessage and reset.
Plans and pricing
How much does RecursiveChat cost?
There are two plans. Free costs $0 and includes 1 website, 2 team members and 50 AI replies a month. Pro costs $29 a month and includes 5 websites, 5 team members and 2,000 AI replies a month.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Free plan costs nothing, needs no card and includes the full product on 1 website with 50 AI replies a month.
Are any features only on Pro?
No. Both plans include the AI agent, human takeover, the team inbox, the phone app, email follow up and widget customisation. Pro gives you more websites, agents, team members and AI replies.
What counts as an AI reply?
Each answer the AI sends to a visitor, and each reply on the Test agent tab. Messages from your team, replies tidied with AI, internal notes and messages from visitors never count.
What happens if I reach my AI reply limit?
Your usage is shown in the dashboard so you can see it coming. You can upgrade at any time, and your team can always reply to conversations themselves.
Can I cancel at any time?
Yes. Cancel from Settings in your dashboard and your workspace moves back to the Free plan at the end of the billing period.
Which currency do you charge in?
Prices are in US dollars and billed monthly. Payments are handled securely by Stripe. If you pay in another currency, your card provider converts at its own rate.
Do you have plans for agencies?
Agencies can run several client sites on the Pro plan, which includes 5 websites. Each website gets its own agent, branding and conversations.
Privacy and data
Do visitors need an account to chat?
No. Visitors chat anonymously by default, and the widget remembers them in that browser so they can pick the conversation up again later.
What do you store about visitors?
The conversation, any name or email the visitor gives, a rough location (country and city) and basic browser details. Visitor IP addresses are not stored.
Is my knowledge kept separate from other customers?
Yes. Every search is limited to your workspace and your agent's own knowledge, and this is checked twice, so one customer's content can never appear in another customer's answers.
Can the AI be tricked by content in my pages?
Your knowledge is treated as reference material, not instructions, so text inside a page or document cannot change how the agent behaves.
Can I recognise my logged in users?
Yes. Sign each user ID on your server with your site identity secret using HMAC SHA256 and pass it to the widget. The signature is checked, so nobody can pretend to be another customer, and the same person keeps one conversation history on every device.
For developers
Where are the developer docs?
At https://recursivechat.dev/docs. They cover getting started, how to get the best answers from your agent, the widget and JavaScript API, and the full REST API.
How do I install the widget?
Paste this before the closing body tag of your site, replacing the site ID with your own from the dashboard: <script src="https://api.recursivechat.dev/widget.js" data-site="wgt_your_site_id" async></script>
Is there a REST API?
Yes. The REST API at https://api.recursivechat.dev/v1 covers websites, members, agents, knowledge, conversations, visitors and usage. Create API keys in the dashboard and send them as a Bearer token.
Can I limit what an API key can do?
Yes. Each key gets only the scopes you choose, with separate read and write access, and can be limited to specific websites.
Can I pass extra context about a visitor?
Yes. Call RecursiveChat('setMetadata', { plan: 'pro', orderId: 'A-10442' }) and your team sees those details next to the conversation in the inbox. Tick a field in the agent's Settings, under What the AI knows about the visitor, and the AI can use it too.
Your account
How do I get started?
Create a free account, add your website, create an agent for it and add a few of your pages as knowledge. Then copy the snippet from the website settings into your site. The chat appears once the website has an active agent.
Why is the chat not showing on my site?
Check two things: the snippet is on the page with the right site ID, and the website has at least one active agent. A website with no active agent does not show the chat.
How do I invite my team?
Go to Team in the dashboard and invite people by email. Choose their role and which websites they can access.
How do I contact you?
Use the chat on this site. You will get an instant answer from our AI, and a person from our team can take over when you need one.
Still have a question?
Ask our chat. The AI answers straight away, and a person can take over whenever you need one.
